Festival Review: LIDO Festival Charli XCX
Charli XCX brings brat summer energy to a sold-out Lido Festival, curating a bold, joy-filled day of pop, electronics and chaos in the sun.
Charli’s brat had its anniversary in the past couple of weeks, and what a year it’s been for the songstress from Essex. At the end of Coachella, she told the audience that brat summer doesn’t have to end. Her outing today at Lido would further provide fuel for the burning fire that is brat girl summer.
The sun, bright green customised shirts and attire affiliated with hot girls pathed the way from Mile End to Victoria Park as a sold out Lido Festival helmed by Charli was sure to be one for the books.
The Japanese House provided warm guitar led pop on the main stage, a softer touch the day’s proceeding as groups of friends held hands and swayed to the love tinged ballads of Amy Bain’s discography.
The Dare packed out the second stage tent, with the appearance of Pinkpantheress creating a sound that could be heard from the opposite side of the park. His dance punk and sleazy persona.
Gesaffelstein came in for a sunset show full of him at his best; pure French electro bangers that melded into one another as. Donning an all-black outfit that included a mask of his face that outlined all of his features as well as the markings of his hair encased in black crystals (impressive, really),
Charli, the moment a lot of this crowd had been waiting for. A rapturous scream for each track performed, ‘365’. Taking us to some of her classics like ‘I luv it’ and ‘vroom vroom’, catering to the olde Charli faithful as well as new. Pure pop sensation who ushers the crowd with her calls for jumping and more dancing, turning Victoria Park to her own dance floor. Who was tonight’s apple girl. A London faithful, blonde, slightly awkward woman appeared on the screen, crowning Amelia Diamoldenberg as the apple girl for tonight. Bringing out bladee for the rewind remix before realising that they might’ve been singing to the wrong version, providing a wholesome moment. She’s just like us, everyone!
A successful day for those wrapped up in the brat universe, it seems, as Charli curates a stacked line-up of some musical greats (A.G Cook and newer artists who are destined to be the future of music (Rose Gray, Magdalena Bay), with the sun coming out and staying for a joyous occasion of pure pop and electronics.
