Primavera Ones To Watch: Weekend One
With Primavera about to be in full swing we look at a few artists we think you’d be a fool to miss.
We’ve been drooling over Primavera Sound’s 2022 line-up since its release. From indie-rock legends, Pavement to occasional Introvert, Little Simz. We’ve taken on the near impossible task of cherry picking five ones to watch from Weekend 1.
Pavement
Considered to be the inventors of modern indie, Pavement should really be on everyone’s list of ones to watch (if you get the chance). Tracks like ‘Stereo’ ‘Cut Your Hair’ and ‘Shady Lane’ (to name a few) shaped the indie genre we know and love today. It’s been a long old wait from since their split in the late 90s, to their first reunion 2010. Our prayers were finally answered when Pavement’s second reunion announcement was shared all the way back in June 2019. Where else to have that first comeback show? Primavera Sound Barcelona of course.
Earl Sweatshirt
Branded by the New Yorker as "the most exciting rapper to emerge in years,” Thebe Neruda Kgositsile, otherwise known as Earl Sweatshirt, is a definite one to watch. The LA native has been sharing his artistry since Tyler, the Creator’s invitation to join Odd Future back in 2009. Drawing influences from the likes of RZA, J Dilla and MF Doom, Earl Sweatshirt has received extensive critical praise and labelled “a hip-hop prodigy”. Earl Sweatshirt added to his already impressive catalogue with the announcement of fourth studio album ‘Sick! (announced January 2022), making us all the more eager to catch his show.
Beach House
The sweet lullabies of Alex Scally and Victoria Legrand, better known as Beach House will soothe your soul. The duo set the foundations for dream pop and took us on a bewitching journey that currently rests at 8 albums deep. Beach House’s latest release “Once Twice Melody” is a full celebration of their iconic sound, we can’t wait to experience it in its live environment.
Little Simz
Since releasing “Sometimes I Might Be Introvert” in 2021, Little Simz’s songbook is further proven that it gets better as every time a new chapter is added. The force of nature that is Little Simz is not one to be questioned. Continually recognised for achieving critical acclaim, Little Simz’s body of work across multiple albums and mixtapes is a gift to us all, plus, it's the perfect soundtrack to listen to as we sit and watch the clock count down to her Primavera performance.
Myd
5th on our list is producer/collaborator extraordinaire, Myd. You may remember him from French electronic group, Club Cheval, but Myd will most likely enter your life after he released one of the catchiest tracks of 2021. Myd has been releasing hit after hit since joining legendary label, Ed Banger in 2017. There’s no denying that the music Myd makes is music that makes you want to dance. Myd’s first solo album “Born a Loser,” is far from defeatist, it's a party we’re all invited to.
