Track By Track: Flasher
Flasher illuminate us with a track by track of their brilliant new album Love Is Yours.
After releasing Constant Image and a successful tour, the Washington, DC music scene looked to be continuously evolving. Flasher was likewise hit by the upheaval. Daniel Saperstein, the band's bassist, walked out. When guitarist Taylor Mulitz ultimately decided to relocate, first to Baltimore and then to Los Angeles, the band became bi-coastal. Working in a duo needed some readjusting. The process of writing songs changed dramatically, but in a way that felt invigorating right away.
“Once we had this implosion, we let go of the pretence and confines that we had pigeonholed ourselves into,” Here’s a guide to Flasher’s daring new album.
I Saw You
TAYLOR - “I Saw You” is about the intense desire to be fully seen (as understood by the self) and the simultaneous fear of being taken at face value (somehow at odds with what's within).
LOVE IS YOURS
TAYLOR - “Love is Yours” is about navigating the highs and lows of a long term relationship, the patterns we fall into and how hard it can be to break out of them.
LITTLE THINGS
EMMA - “Little Things” is about my first time experiencing intense vertigo.
NOTHING
EMMA - “Nothing” is about disappointment - reflecting on the hurt someone caused and their inability to accept the consequences of their actions, despite their desire to be held accountable.
SPELL IT OUT
TAYLOR - “Spell it Out” is an instrumental interlude that was born out of in-studio experimentation involving a lot of unconventional percussion elements.
STILL LIFE
TAYLOR - “Still Life” is about existential dread and anxiety in the face of technology, climate change, collective trauma, the mundane everyday, cyborgs, etc… essentially just trying to make sense of the present moment.
ALL DAY LONG
TAYLOR - “All Day Long” is about the early stages of a relationship and the anxiety and obsessive scrutiny that comes along with it.
I’M BETTER
EMMA - “I’m Better” is about leaving a toxic relationship and feeling absolute joy, freedom and superiority on the other side.
SIDEWAYS
TAYLOR - “Sideways” is about driving and self-reflection - that liminal space that inevitably brings things to the surface because you’re forced to sit with your own thoughts without distraction.
PINK
TAYLOR - “Pink” is an instrumental interlude for the song “Damage”
DAMAGE
EMMA - TW Assault. “Damage” is about a time I was sexually assaulted by someone I know and trust in a place that felt like home.
DIAL UP
TAYLOR - “Dial Up” draws on imagery of a dream I had – one where I was reaching out and calling into the distance but couldn’t quite make the connection I was searching for.
TANGERINE
TAYLOR - “Tangerine” is about reckoning with the selfish parts of oneself and others.
