Greg Freeman announces his new album, All Set to the Bone, and shares his lead single, lyrically dense “Indu” in what will be his third full length release, perfect for fans of MJ Lenderman
Freeman has been around a while now and has only gone from strength to strength; with records like ‘Burnover’ and ‘I Looked Out’ have shown his ability as a MJ Lenderman-esque slacker rock artist that moves with an effortless groove that most artists struggle to capture. ‘Indu’ – lead single from ‘All Set to the Bone’, pulls you in instantly. His album was finished quickly in a Hollywood studio that he pulls from grief, moving and political tension in the hotbed that is the United States to create what is sure to be a unique experience that, in his own words, “should never feel comfortable. Every album should scare you,” and ‘All Set to the Bone’ looks set to be no different – with the artist refusing to stay still and it instantly becomes apparent from ‘Indu’ that this track is familiar; and yet different from what came before, drifting at times almost into Pond-esque psychedelica at times. If you’re a fan of the Cameron Winter corner of the Geese sphere, you’ll be right at home.
The baroque piano fits in with the grooving indie that sees the Vermont native switch gears from the alt-country marvel of ‘Burnover’, which earned a lofty 8.3 score on Pitchfork when it was released in 2025, proving his ability to blend historical fiction in ‘Burnover’ or ‘Wolf Pine’ with a mixture of first-person storytelling that comes in the novel-ready ‘Gallic Shrug’. Freeman does this without a sense of agency and a finely tuned nonchalance that allows a warm, welcoming feeling that only grows on you with repeat listens. ‘Burnover’, by all accounts – is as strong as they come – and ‘Indu’ is no different – already showing signs of being a lyrically dense masterpiece from the off, with the skill at a poet at the top of his game. “All I want to do Is look at you // Looking at me // with the moonlight in your eyes”, the lyrics repeat with a sense of lyrically moving longing that evokes an instant sense of time and place. “Indu where’s your star tonight? // I’ll hitch my wagon to its sight // My picture of you is losing light”.
In a press release, Freeman says, "I had this epiphany moment where I understood what the next record should be, which surprised me because I thought it would take a lot longer to have the influences or inspiration required to undertake writing a new album." It is not a solo effort; but instead, as always - a collective - and has contributions from longtime collaborators Garrett Linck and Sam Atallah, as well as Florry’s Joey Sullivan and members of the Rockin' Worms - showing strength in unity that has never been more apparent.
