Incredibly talented Naarm/Melbourne band Radio Free Alice share new single ‘Kick in the Shins’ – that further cement their growth as a band; by portraying a scrapbook day in the life of the band that stumbles through their growing pains from the window of a tour bus. It seems their hardworking approach to touring underground venues has paid off – they’ve booked an extensive festival slot that includes Reading and Leeds, who booked them a few weeks ahead of the event due to growing popularity – a telltale sign of a band that’s about to hit the big time.
One of the best approaches to building a following has been word of mouth and Radio Free Alice are one of the genuine word of mouth success stories as of late. Their UK tour in 2025 went better than they could have hoped for – six sold out headlines in London alone, with lively capacity, a crowd surfing fanbase and one with a Radio Free Alice tattoo emblazoned across his torso – not bad for a band just starting out to get this kind of devoted loyalty this early on.
That success has been rewarded with support slots for band of the moment, Geese, on their sold out tour of Australia in February, and their debut appearance at New York’s prestigious festival Governor’s Ball gives them some staying power. Recent festival slots at Czechia, Netherlands, Belgium, Spain and France have gone down a storm – and having caught them myself at Rock Werchter on its tastemaker discovery stage the Nest, consider myself lucky enough to witness the Radio Free Alice hype first hand. They’re a special band – and have the power to capture the voice of the Smiths for the current generation; with as much care and craft in their lyrics. Obvious comparisons include the likes of Wunderhorse and Fontaines DC – and they feel well equipped to follow in that trajectory. Don’t be surprised if they too, end up in the golden halls of Alexandra Palace one day.
Formed in Gadigal Land/Sydney in 2020 before making the move to Naarm/Melbourne, Radio Free Alice - Noah Learmonth (he/him; vocals, guitar), Jules Paradiso (he/him; guitar), Michael Phillips (he/him; bass, saxophone) and Lochie Dowd (he/him; drums) - continue to make their mark with their wildly consistent output and vital live performances. Their work with Ewan Pearson (Depeche Mode, Metronomy) and Peter Katis (Interpol, Death Cab for Cutie and The National) has put them instantly in well-established fields for a truly global tour.
