Mathilde Bataillé & Joseph Futak - Entertain The Thought Single Review

On Entertain the Thought, Joseph Futak’s electronic atmospherics add an offbeat swagger to Mathilde Bataille’s beautiful and expressive vocals.

On Entertain the Thought, Joseph Futak’s electronic atmospherics add an offbeat swagger to Mathilde Bataille’s beautiful and expressive vocals. The young producer from London and the French chanteuse met at Goldsmiths University and toured the same live circuit before collaborating on this track. Entertain the Thought was recorded during the hottest weather of summer 2020 and it tells in the sticky heat emanating from the track. The lazy bass line and loping beat slouch along, not troubling to break into a sweat, as the production is flecked with little pops and crackles of analogue warmth.

The pair swap vocal duties but share the same lines in turn, which are suggestive of more than they let on, “restless in bed, caught between fantasy and fear”. Bataille segues into a lovelorn croon over a wobbly Bonobo-esque beat, which I could’ve happily nodded along to for several more minutes but everything draws to a close within three minutes. Hopefully next time these two collaborate, they’ll entertain their thoughts a little longer.
