If Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino left a psych-lounge itch in the back of your mind Cosmic Crooner is here to scratch that itch. Taking influence from David Bowie and Serge Gainbourg we sat down with him to discuss his debut single Deep Down in Jazz.

For those unfamiliar with your music, can you tell us who you are, where you’re from, and a little bit about the music that you make?

I’m Cosmic Crooner from Amsterdam and I make Doowop Spacepop. My debut single, ‘Deep Down in Jazz’ is out now.

What is your songwriting process like?

Reading, coffee, reading, trying to write something, coffee, in need of sugar, cookies, writing and then I’ll try to record a demo.

How did you produce your recent single Deep Down In Jazz?

I worked with producer Pieter Vonk, who is an amazingly talented semi young man. We were lucky to work with brilliant musicians and recorded a lot of stuff live.

Can you tell us more about the lyrics?

The lyrics are an introduction to Cosmic Crooner, who uses tilt to receive awards.

What do you love about psychedelic lounge pop?

I love classic grooves and the sound of space related albums. It takes you to another world.

We love the Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino vibe of the track. Should we expect future tracks to be in a similar vein?

Yeah, many records I like are from the 60s and 70s, so there’ll be more of that.

How does Amsterdam influence you as an artist?

Everyone cycles in Amsterdam, but I rather walk. This makes some parts very calm to walk, especially nowadays. During these walks I’m inspired by the city and its people. Often, I’ve found myself running home, having ideas for new songs.

Who are some of your biggest influences as an artist?

I think David Bowie and Serge Gainbourg had the biggest impact on me as an artist. They were both unique and always kept evolving. I’m also intrigued by lots of 60s and 70s Italian and French film scores.

What do you hate right now?

That I’m not able to hug my parents, due to the pandemic.

What do you love right now?

That ‘Deep Down in Jazz’ is out now and here for everyone to enjoy.

Do you have any plans to perform live in 2021?

Yes, fingers crossed, but in this day and age you just can’t be sure.

Is there any new music from 2021 that you’re enjoying?

I’m a big fan of Weyes Blood and can’t wait for a new album. Weyes Blood and Zella Day just released a new single, so until a new album is released, I’m enjoying this.

What else can we expect from you in 2021? Any more releases planned?

More music, cute videos and hopefully on stage crooning over my spoon.

Do you have any final life lessons or tips for our readers?

Don’t forget to breathe.
