Start Listening To: Courting

We had the pleasure of speaking with Courting about their upcoming EP and got to learn more about their song writing process.

For those unfamiliar with your music, can you tell us who you are, where you’re from, and a little bit about the music that you make?

Courting, Liverpool, and music for people with short attention spans.

What is your songwriting process like?

We do it over a long period of tim; everything is collaged together from pieces of art that we enjoy — quotes from TV shows and lines from books and adverts taken apart and repurposed to mean something that means something to us.

How was your upcoming EP recorded?

Mostly live, with overdubs of instruments that we don’t have enough members to play. We recorded it with Robert Whiteley down here in Liverpool.

Who are you referring to in your lyrics for Pop Shop?

Sometimes, when people write about our music, I fear that they think we’re more serious than we actually are. Popshop! is about artists getting criticised for “selling out” especially in punk culture, when all they’re really doing is experimenting with their sound. People seem to have removed the idea of hypocrisy from selling out.

What would you change about the music industry?

Every deal would be in favour of the artist.

Who has influenced you as a band?

Right now, we’ve been listening to a lot of Charli XCX, SOPHIE, CAN, Hella & Gil Scott-Heron.

What do you hate most right now?

Albums that are like 50 minutes long and are just song after song of the same material, stretched thin. I’d rather have a 20 minute album of solid music than 50 minutes of shit.

What do you love most right now?

I’ve just binged 3 seasons of Twin Peaks and I’m very confused but very in love with it.

What’s it like working with Swan Records?

A great marriage, they really understand what we’re going for. Best set of new signings in 2020 of any label.

What do you think of label-mates Sports Team?

We <3 them, hopefully we can play together again soon.

Are there any releases from other artists that you are looking forward to at the moment?

New Black Country, New Road album is something we’re excited for, as is the new shame album. I think it’s exciting to see interesting art coming out of the UK is all.

What are your opinions on the current UK indie scene? Do you feel bands aren’t getting the opportunities to grow a following in the same way due to not being able to play live?

We’re all in the same boat together so I don’t think it matters too much. Think there’ll be a lot of fun to be had when this is all over.

Do you have any plans to tour in 2021?

Let’s see what happens

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Pre-order our EP Grand National if you have any spare cash. <3
