Car Seat Headrest Reimagine ‘Teens of Denial’ With New Anniversary Edition ‘Joe’s Story’
A decade on from their breakthrough album, Car Seat Headrest revisit Teens of Denial with new songs, rewritten lyrics and a deeper narrative centred around the mysterious figure of “Joe”.
Car Seat Headrest have unveiled a reworked version of their breakout 2016 album Teens of Denial to mark its tenth anniversary. Titled Teen of Denial: Joe’s Story, the expanded reimagining is out digitally now as part of the Matador Revisionist History series, with physical LP and CD editions set to follow on October 16.
Alongside the announcement, the band have shared a brand new track titled ‘Joe Drives Again’, a sharp and infectious rock song that slips comfortably into the world of the original album while pushing its story into new territory. The updated release also includes another new song, ‘Optimistic Son’, alongside revised lyrics, fresh arrangements and changes to the original tracklist.
The project began when frontman Will Toledo revisited Teens of Denial ahead of its anniversary and started seeing the album as a loose narrative centred around the recurring figure of “Joe”, a name originally inspired by songwriter Daniel Johnston. Toledo explained that while “Joe” initially functioned as a stand-in character across several songs, revisiting the record years later led him to imagine a fuller backstory for the figure.
To bring the new version to life, the band reunited with original Teens of Denial producer Steve Fisk, returning to the studio to reshape the material and record new songs in what Toledo described as a “Denial-style” approach. According to Toledo, the updated version maintains the darkness and cynicism of the original record while introducing a greater sense of perspective and compassion gained over the past decade.
In a statement, Toledo reflected on the process of revisiting the album years later, explaining that the distance from the original writing sessions allowed him to see the songs in a different light. He described the experience of recording new vocals through the same studio equipment used in 2015 as surreal, with past and present versions of himself sitting side by side within the songs.
Originally released in 2016, Teens of Denial became a defining record within modern indie rock, helping establish Car Seat Headrest as one of the most celebrated guitar bands of the decade. Teen of Denial: Joe’s Story now reframes that album as something fluid and evolving, opening the door to a new interpretation of a familiar record.
