Caroline Rose Finally Releases Long-Lost Fan Favourite ‘Yip Yip Yow’
Caroline Rose has finally released a studio version of long-time fan favourite “Yip Yip Yow”, a song that has spent more than a decade as a cult staple of their live shows without ever receiving an official release.
Out now through Rose’s newly launched independent label SUCK Records, the track captures the raw and playful energy that has made it a standout moment at concerts for years. Produced by John Congleton, “Yip Yip Yow” folds together elements of psychobilly, alt-country, pop and garage rock, with Rose describing it as sounding like “four teenagers in a garage” equally inspired by The Gun Club and Britney Spears.
The song has gained a near-mythical reputation among fans since appearing in Rose’s early live sets, including a memorable performance during a 2015 NPR Tiny Desk appearance. Speaking about finally sharing an official version, Rose reflected on the personal connection they still feel to the track a decade after writing it.
According to Rose, the song was originally written about feelings of displacement and not fitting into the world around them. They also admitted that hesitation around releasing such a simple and chaotic song kept it shelved for years, though their perspective has shifted over time. Rose now sees the song as part of a wider tradition of outsider artists creating strange, immediate music that exists entirely on its own terms.
The release marks another left turn in a career defined by constant reinvention. Across albums including LONER, Superstar and The Art of Forgetting, Rose has moved between alt-country, synth-pop and experimental songwriting while building a fiercely individual artistic identity. Their 2023 album The Art of Forgetting earned widespread acclaim and received a Grammy nomination for Best Recording Package.
Last year, Rose released the lo-fi project year of the slug, which was recorded entirely on an iPhone and distributed independently through Bandcamp without a traditional rollout. The launch of SUCK Records signals a new fully independent chapter for the artist.
Alongside the single release, Rose has announced a run of intimate pop-up shows taking place this July in cities including New York City, Washington and Chicago, with locations only revealed to ticket holders shortly before each event. Later in the year, Rose will also join Modest Mouse for a North American tour throughout the autumn.
