East London’s Chinwe Releases Brand New track, ‘Paranoia’
‘Paranoia’ turns past failures into personal growth — ‘discovering the light within.’
Chinwe welcomes a new era with ‘Paranoia’ following the release of her debut EP Scar Tissue as she prepares to release her sophomore EP project in early 2023. Chinwe's ominous soundscapes sparkle with rich instrumentals and her warm vocal timbre, fusing the contemporary musical stylings of Portishead with Nina Simone's lush, jazz-filled rhythms. You can listen to ‘Paranoia’ here!
Chinwe says of the song: “The single is about looking back on situations and feeling let down by people - like no one really has your back. Sometimes it changes you, and you try to protect yourself from the same things happening again. But we’re all flawed as human beings and we can’t shut ourselves off from everyone. That’s kind of what the song is getting at – we all make mistakes, but hopefully we grow from them and embrace the lessons.”
Chinwe’s Jamaican mother and Nigerian father exposed her to a wide variety of music from a young age. The self-taught artist, who had previously studied classical violin, began creating songs as a teenager and dabbling in production as another creative outlet. She experimented with the harp during the lockdown, an instrument that is prominent in her recent releases and has further shaped her distinctive style.
‘Paranoia’ is out now through DMY, and her sophomore EP will follow in the new year. Chinwe is definitely one to watch.
