Even Fred’s Happy share debut single “The Best Looking Man In The Pub”
One of the best live acts on the London scene (and we’re not just saying that because Freddie writes for us).
London art-punk oddballs Even Fred’s Happy return today with their debut single, “The Best Looking Man In The Pub,” a flamboyant, anxious disco-punk anthem that arrives ahead of a special launch show at The Bill Murray Comedy Club next week.
Described by the band as “if James Acaster decided to front a camp Yard Act tribute band,” the track is a feverish blend of sardonic lyricism, big synth hooks, and post-punk swagger, produced by Darren Jones (Stormzy, Fat Dog, Emile Sande). It’s absurd, energetic and deeply self-aware: part performance art, part dancefloor confession.
“The Best Looking Man In The Pub” also acts as a calling card for Even Fred’s Happy’s theatrical, leftfield approach. Vocalist Fred describes it as “the painted smile at the start of a truly horrible evening… a gregarious front that’s not really convincing yourself or anyone else that everything’s alright. It’s sad, and it’s silly. Very, very silly.”
The band, Fred (vocals, keys), Günther (bass, synth) and Cowboy Hat (guitar), solidified their current lineup in 2023 and have quickly carved out a reputation for their unpredictable shows and genre-skewering sound. Whether playing post-punk nights at The Windmill, pop lineups alongside Laura Mvula, or curating their own Post Punk is Dead parties (the last of which featured DJ sets from Tony Gardner and Still Listening Magazine), the trio are fast becoming one of London’s most unconventional new live acts.
The single launch show takes place on April 23 at The Bill Murray Comedy Club, where the band also filmed the track’s visualiser.
