Gig Review: Michelle @ The Great Escape
The New York collective share their musical gifts and transport us to MICHELLE’s world and it’s a fun place to be.
There’s no denying MICHELLE aren’t cool, their effortless charisma pours out of them. Watching their live sessions online -makes for a thirsty audience. For fans this side of the Atlantic, this run of shows will been the first time seeing the six piece in person. A night with Michelle is inclusive, beautifully choreographed and bursting with good energy.
Charming the audience with their harmonies, like sirens on the stage: Emma Lee, Layla Ku, Jamee Lockard and Sofia D’Angelo each taking it in turns to share the mic. There’s a fair balance between the vocalists, they all complement each other in a sincere and free-spirited way. Supported by the backing instrumentation from Julian Kaufman and Charlie Kilgore (and a newly made juice bottle shaker, using pebbles found from the beach earlier in the day). The New York six piece know how to have fun whilst performing. A night with MICHELLE feels like a party and everybody is invited.
It’s obvious these guys have thought about how to elevate their tracks in a live setting. They have put the rehearsal hours in, yes, but not to a point where every note and move is over thought, the set flows naturally, like a conversation between friends.
MICHELLE’s sound and vibe is infectious, they are a band that makes you want to learn all the lyrics (and the dance routines) to their songs. There are few bands doing what MICHELLE do. This show was a breathe of fresh air.
Each live rendition from their musical library was a banger, there’s no doubt about that. ‘Pose’, ‘Mess U Made’ ‘Sunrise’ and ‘The Bottom’ were particular highlights but don’t just take our word for it - catch one of their shows for yourself!
