Ruby Doomsday Return With Horror-Tinged Surf Rock Single ‘The Original Spin’

A 60s-inspired cut paired with a monster movie video, the South London duo lean into nostalgia and unease on their second release.

South London duo Ruby Doomsday have released their second single, ‘The Original Spin’, a 60s-inspired surf rock track that leans into both classic horror cinema and real-world unease. Drawing on the band’s love of monster movies, the single arrives alongside a playful music video starring TikTok-famous “Demon Dog” Crumpet.

Recorded and produced by Saam Jafarzadeh at Dean Street Studios, ‘The Original Spin’ channels a vintage aesthetic while keeping one foot firmly in the present. Joey Julliard describes the track as a tribute to lifelong horror obsessions, citing everything from King Kong to Creature from the Black Lagoon as inspiration.

Comprised of Joey Julliard, whose past projects include Swim Deep, and Courtney McMahon, formerly of Rats-Tails, Ruby Doomsday draw on 60s harmonies and sharp, Kinks-style songwriting, with a cutesy indie pop streak not far off late 2000s Los Campesinos!. Their debut single ‘Blood and Thunder’ picked up support from Wet Leg, who featured it in pre-show playlists during their Moisturizer World Tour.

The band are set to continue their live run with a show at Paper Dress Vintage in London on 10 April, supporting Charlie Vaughan, and will also appear at The Great Escape later this year.
