Folk Bitch Trio Announce Debut Album ‘Now Would Be A Good Time’
Share Gorgeous New Single “Cathode Ray”.
Melbourne/Naarm’s Folk Bitch Trio have announced details of their long-awaited debut album Now Would Be A Good Time, out July 25th via Jagjaguwar. The news arrives alongside a striking new single and video, “Cathode Ray,” offering another glimpse into the band’s sharp, harmony-rich songwriting.
Following the acclaimed lead single “The Actor,” which Rolling Stone praised as a “Song You Need to Know,” “Cathode Ray” opens with a haunting vulnerability, its harmonies floating above a spare, spacious arrangement. Lyrically, it explores visceral selfhood and frustration. “It expresses a feeling of being trapped in myself, and wanting to break out of that so violently that I’m literally talking about opening up a body,” explains vocalist Gracie Sinclair.
The trio consists of Gracie Sinclair (she/her), Jeanie Pilkington (she/her), and Heide Peverelle (they/them), who have developed a reputation for cutting through with vivid, acerbic lyricism and disarming three-part harmonies. Now Would Be A Good Time distills their personal narratives into songs that feel intimate yet expansive, touching on dissociation, desire, and media-fuelled discontent. The album was recorded to tape in Auckland with producer Tom Healy (Tiny Ruins, Marlon Williams), emphasizing minimal, idiosyncratic instrumentation that centers the trio’s voices and guitars.
Individually, the band members bring a rich palette of influences: Pilkington’s roots in classic Americana, Peverelle’s DIY sensibility and pop leanings, and Sinclair’s dramatic flair and love of gothic iconoclasts. Together, they’ve created a record that feels grounded in tradition while articulating a distinctly contemporary perspective, capturing youth, uncertainty, and connection refracted through sound.
Folk Bitch Trio are currently in the UK and will play a sold-out headline show at London’s St Pancras Old Church tomorrow (May 14). They then head to Brighton for a trio of performances at The Great Escape festival on May 15th and 16th.
