Charlotte Adigéry & Bolis Pupul Return With Soulwax Co-Produced Single ‘Googoo Gaga’

The Belgian duo explore the exhaustion and responsibility of parenthood on their first single in four years.

Charlotte Adigéry & Bolis Pupul have released ‘Googoo Gaga’, their first single since their 2022 debut album Topical Dancer. Out now through Because Music, the track features co-production from Soulwax’s David and Stephen Dewaele and arrives with a video directed by Lennert Madou. Written during a period in which both Adigéry and Pupul became parents, it considers the daily demands of raising a child, from the repetitive routines of feeding and getting them to sleep to the worry that follows you through it all.

The song also addresses the isolation that can accompany parenting, and the difficulty of finding your own way through it while someone depends on you. ‘It takes a village, and yet you’re doing it alone,’ the duo explain. ‘This record was made as we both became parents: “Googoo Gaga” is about feeling drained, the self-sacrifice, the overwhelm, yet embracing all of it.’

Madou’s video draws on De Mammelokker, a story associated with the duo’s home city of Ghent, in which a daughter secretly breastfeeds her imprisoned father to save him from starvation. The visual reinterprets the scene with a Black woman feeding an elderly white man, bringing questions of race, gender and dependency into its depiction of care. In the duo’s interpretation, the person providing nourishment holds the power to keep another alive, drawing attention to work that is often expected of women but goes unacknowledged.
