Mandrake Handshake Announce Second Album ‘Laputa’ With New Single ‘The Tether/Modulo 5’ Out Now
Mandrake Handshake are back with album number two ‘Laputa’ in the wake of the critically-acclaimed ‘Earth-Sized Worlds’, out January 29th 2027 via Tip Top Recordings
The free wheelin’, psych-ready experimental unit Mandrake Handshake have won acclaim for their debut 2025 album ‘Earth Sized Worlds’ from pretty much all involved; and now they’re back for album number two - ‘Laputa’, after two years away - having played festivals like Latitude, Green Man, Manchester/Brighton Psych, and sold-out London headliners like The 100 Club (a memorable show in its own right); and even made the journey to Angine de Poitrine-discoverers to KEXP in February, having repeated backing on the Radio 6 Music and Radio X airwaves, with support from Deb Grant, Nathan Sheperd, Don Letts, Gideon Coe, Radcliffe & Maconie, and John Kennedy.
Looking set to tour across France and play at Misty Fields festival ahead of a new collection of music to be released this winter, Mandrake Handshake are back - ‘The Tether / Modulo 5’ shows the Mandrake caught between two states of being.
“The Tether is adrift in the oldest and most treacherous ocean: that of limerence, here - love is not merely desired by ontological, to be touched is to be witnessed into existence, to be wanted is to acquire edges, weight and a name.
With her tether cut - she begins to dissolve beneath the tides of longing, drawn moonward by the suspicion that perhaps she might find somewhere beyond herself, the force that governs the waters.”
Written last summer amongst a writing camp that included time spent with Ruairi Richman of Lemonade Shoelace, the song became “an experiment in emotional physics; Ruairi the deranged technician at the controls,” whilst Mandrake embraced them and became one with the impossible mechanisms. This is experimental, free flowing music that shows what happens when equations are abandoned and cast into disarray irrationality embraced in three minute bursts of acceleration, combustion and psychedelic transmission with the velocity of light put through a fuzz pedal.
