otta Shares New Single ‘BLIP’ Ahead Of Debut Album ASTRA
The British-Finnish artist’s self-produced debut arrives on 20 November, followed by a London show at Spanners.
otta has released ‘BLIP’, the final single ahead of her debut album ASTRA, due on 20 November through löyly. Accompanied by a video directed by Ciara Reddy, the song began as a demo intended to teach her live band a new track. That informal recording became the basis for the album version, retaining an approach that otta says emerged naturally from playing it live.
‘I think this song has a vulnerability to it but also it feels strong,’ she explains. ‘This song has always existed more in a live setting, it’s nice the album version is just a version that happened naturally.’ The video follows a similarly open process. ‘I like working with Ciara on videos because we approach our processes in a similar way, some things get planned but we both like to just let things emerge.’
Following 2025’s With Love From Everywhere, ASTRA was produced by otta, who also played every instrument on the record. Dilip Harris, whose credits include King Krule and Little Dragon, handled the mixing. The album marks a shift from earlier releases made with collaborators including kwes., who released her first EPs through his BOKKLE label, and black midi drummer Morgan Simpson.
The record took shape during a period in which otta was living with chronic fatigue following a coronavirus infection. Recordings of her surroundings, including birds, planes and a passing school parade, became part of its texture. Lisbon was among the places where she worked on the album, which brings those everyday sounds together with acoustic instruments, synthesisers and drum programming.
