u n w i n d - a list of the chillest tracks

Ten tracks for slow walks, wandering thoughts and doing absolutely nothing, from Tristan Arp’s mossy electronics to Hiroshi Yoshimura’s gentle melodies.

This is your autumn prescription for some of the mellowest, contemplative, energy cleansing music I could get my yogi hands on.

Let these tracks be your chamomile tea infused with lion’s mane.

Go for a walk.

Gaze at the stars.

 Stretch and breathe.

 Journal and doodle.

Or just do nothing, this isn’t a test. This is from me to you. And if you like it, send it to a friend, or a loved one. Or someone who needs it.

★ Tristan Arp - Invisible cities

Music you’d expect the mycelium network to sound like. Surging with energy, yet still soft and satisfying. From Tristan Arp’s beautifully weird album a pool, a portal. You can’t help but feel your body slowly cover with moss and forget that concrete exists.

★ Dj Counselling - House Below the Forest Floor

Okay, so this album is a bit on the heavier side, but felt outrageous to leave off the list. So visceral, glitchy and introspective. The whole album, Alt-Mobeat, got me through a tough winter travelling around London on the underground last year, so passing it on for anyone who needs some peace. The bass fully covers the city's clatter.

★ ((( O ))) - Safe place

The artist ((( O ))) (to be pronounced “moondrops”) is the marvellous June Marieezy. Her albums, released every year on the 27th August are a gift of sound waves for the soul. This is an album I practice yoga with, it instils peace, and releases the vagus nerve. Each track is a soundscape of drone, trance, field recordings, musings, creativity. ‘Safe Place’ is just one of the magnificent songs off her album ((( 5 )))

★ Andras - Stereo Dunnies

A track you could study with, truly lock in, read, walk, cook, journal, do anything with. Has enough energy to lose you in a gentle two-step. Cool, calm and collected electronica. Andras’s 2016 album House of Dad is also a delicious accompaniment to any solo walk, perfect when wandering past houses wondering about other lives and universes going on at this exact moment. Feeling both observer and observed.

★ Photay - Derecho

Imagine a spark of electricity travelling through a network of wires, atoms of energy flowing. That’s this song, it’s cyber, funky, house. You can feel all of these feelings, even through meditation. And so what if you reach enlightenment? Coming from Photay’s Windswept album, a bold selection of tracks that all make you feel rather daring.

★ Jack J - Closing The Door

Where do I start with Jack J? A psychedelic, joy ride inward. Weaving dreamlike indie, that makes you want to jump in the car and drive away, to some seriously quiet tracks that make you feel like you’re underwater. If you ever need a source of creative inspiration, maybe try his album Opening The Door. Good luck.

★ Domenique Dumont - Watching Boats Pass By

From the album People on Sunday. It’s hazy, like when half dreaming, half awake. Originally commissioned to be a new soundtrack to a 1930’s German silent film. It fills you with a quiet wonder. Allows space for your thoughts to drift elsewhere.

★ Headphone Activist - Paradox

Mixing lo-fi hip hop, ambient, minimal beats, he creates a world of isolation. Music to contemplate to. I think I’d like to be friends with him, his only ambition is to “make someone’s day better” with his music. Now he’s a keeper and one to add to your radar.

★ Oneohtrix Point Never - Love In The Time Of Lexapro

This track is (to me) a stand alone guided meditation track. Dissolves you into ultra fine grains of sand, you wash away into the ocean never to be seen in the same formation again. It’s dramatic and over the top, but that’s why I think I love it. Be too much, go to the furthest extremes of your creativity and imagination.

★ Hiroshi Yoshimura - Green

To end this selection, like in a yoga practice you return to savasana. Corpse pose. Hiroshi lulls you into the ether, lures you into a deep, comforting sleep. Like receiving a hug from someone you love. The gentle melodies calm the nervous system and awaken the senses. From the album Green, which is a collection of songs for beautiful contemplation. My advice, never skip savasana.
