Slumber Release Debut EP Slumber Breaks America! (Attempt #1)
The East London six-piece turn an ill-advised fictional US tour into their debut EP, ahead of a November residency at The George Tavern.
Slumber have released their debut EP, Slumber Breaks America! (Attempt #1), today (2 October), alongside new single ‘On & On’. The six-track release follows a fictional band who decide to bypass the sensible stages of building a career and head straight to America, with predictably unsuccessful results. Slumber gave the story a real-life counterpart earlier this year, travelling to New York for a single show at Nightclub 101 before returning to London for a sold-out ‘Welcome Home’ gig at MOTH Club.
The EP approaches that adventure from several angles. ‘America!’ imagines success across the Atlantic, while ‘This Might Be Nothing (But It Could Be Something)’ considers the possibilities of heading into unfamiliar territory. ‘On & On’ deals with what happens once the initial excitement wears off, looking at the fleeting relationships and repetitive nights of touring. Recorded in a small rented studio in Bethnal Green, the release draws on 1990s American alternative rock, the electronic textures and rhythms of 2000s indie, and the shared festival singalongs that shaped the band’s taste.
Formed in East London, Slumber comprise vocalist Alex Standish, guitarists Luke Whorriskey and Bailey Heslop, synth player Isabella Eggen, bassist Max Art-Butlin and drummer Sam Meredith. Their early shows at The George Tavern and Sebright Arms led to sold-out headline dates at The Lexington and MOTH Club. This November, they return to The George Tavern, where they played their first gig, for a three-show residency. Each night will feature a different supporting line-up and setlist, alongside exclusive merchandise.
The residency takes place on 7, 21 and 28 November, with shows in Cardiff, Bristol, Sheffield, Manchester and Brighton between the London dates. The Bristol appearance at The Louisiana will see Slumber supporting Slak. Get tickets here.
