The Flaming Lips Announce New Album The Teardrop Throbs
The band’s first album of new material in more than six years arrives in January, with two London shows to follow in April.
The Flaming Lips have announced a new album, The Teardrop Throbs, due for release on 22 January 2027 via Third Man Records. Their first release for the label, it arrives alongside lead single ‘God Will Control The Werewolves’, which is available to listen to now.
The 13-track record is the Oklahoma band’s 17th official studio album and their first LP of all-new material in more than six years. It was produced by The Flaming Lips with Taylor Johnson, Dave Fridmann and Scott Booker, with additional production from Jon Fridmann and Mike Fridmann.
Frontman Wayne Coyne says ‘God Will Control The Werewolves’ began with an evening playing hide-and-seek with his sons, Bloom and Rex. After watching werewolf films, Bloom asked whether the creatures would get them while they were hiding under a full moon. Coyne reassured him that God would keep the werewolves under control while they played. He describes the sound he had in mind for the song as The Dark Side of the Moon-era Pink Floyd with Syd Barrett still in the band.
Elsewhere on the album, ‘Throb’ draws on music from the 1955 film The Night of the Hunter, while ‘Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell Part Two’ revisits a title from the band’s 2002 album Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots. Coyne says the new song is a different piece of music that returns to ideas of ego, status and power.
The Flaming Lips will play a run of shows in the US and UK following the album’s release, including two nights at London’s O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire on 2 and 3 April 2027. Tickets for all dates go on sale on Friday 30 October.
The Teardrop Throbs will be available digitally, on CD and on black and Teardrop Blue vinyl.
